This sophisticated installation is a study in contrast and natural movement. It features sixteen wooden tiles arranged in a perfect square, creating a bold checkerboard effect.
Half of the tiles glow with the warm, honey-colored patterns of natural wood grain, while the other half are a deep, midnight black. Each tile is carved with flowing, rhythmic ridges that look like wind-blown sand or ripples on a dark lake. Because the textures change direction from one tile to the next, the entire piece feels like it’s subtly shifting as you walk past. It is a powerful, grounding centerpiece that brings a sense of high-end craftsmanship and organic balance to a modern interior.
Medium: Solid sustainable Walnut and charred Ash wood
Technique: Hand-gouged textural carving and deep-relief “Shou Sugi Ban” (charred wood) sculpting
Finish: A mix of natural hand-rubbed oil to highlight golden wood tones and a matte carbon-black finish for the charred panels
Form: A symmetrical 4×4 grid of sixteen individual square tiles featuring alternating horizontal and diagonal “wave” patterns
