Aakāśa Tattva - Orbit Victoria

The project involved creating a bespoke sculptural installation for a luxury residential lobby in Calcutta, inspired by a reference image but reimagined to suit the space. The focus was on achieving a balanced, impactful form with a brushed bronze finish, while carefully addressing scale, lighting interaction, and budget—resulting in a refined piece that harmonizes with the architecture.

Medium: Mixed-media installation (metal wire mesh, FRP, metallic accents)
Finish: Brushed bronze metallic with soft luminous sheen
Technique: Hand-fabricated mesh sculpting, FRP moulding, and suspended tensile wire installation
Lighting: Integrated warm directional and cascading overhead lighting to enhance depth, shadows, and light diffusion
Size: 77.76" (W) × 33.94" (H) × 33.61" (D)

Concept Narrative and Meaning

1. Concept Title Meaning

Akasatattva is derived from two Sanskrit words:

Akasa – Space, Ether, the infinite expanse

Tattva – The fundamental principle or truth of existence

Together, Akasatattva represents the essence of space and the journey of consciousness within it. The installation explores the relationship between the human self, divine guidance, and the unseen layers of existence.

2. Concept Narrative

Every installation carries an underlying philosophy. Sometimes the concept exists clearly from the beginning, but in projects like Akasatattva, the deeper meaning emerges through the creative process. As the installation developed, the artwork began to embody the idea of space, consciousness, and divine guidance.

At the centre of the composition rests a boat-like form, representing the human self — grounded, navigating existence, and in search of direction.

Above the boat float eight suspended mesh forms, layered across varying heights and subtly aligned toward the entrance of the home, an orientation considered auspicious in traditional Vastu philosophy. Each layer is illuminated by focused overhead lighting, allowing the light to scatter gently as it descends through the suspended forms. The cascading light symbolises divine knowledge descending through layers of consciousness.

The guiding light represents Lord Vishnu’s divine presence, illuminating the path of the individual. The boat below becomes the vessel of the human journey, moving forward with faith and purpose. Together, the installation becomes a metaphor for life: When guided by higher wisdom and inner clarity, one always finds the path home.

3. Symbolism of the Eight Suspended Layers : The eight floating mesh elements represent the internal principles and powers that shape human evolution.

Shraddha – Faith
The trust that guides one through uncertainty.

Jnana – Knowledge
The illumination that removes ignorance.

Dhairya – Courage
The strength to navigate life’s challenges.

Karuna – Compassion
The ability to remain humane and empathetic.

Sankalpa – Determination
The willpower required to pursue purpose.

Viveka – Discernment
The wisdom to distinguish right from wrong.

Shanti – Inner Peace
The calm that anchors the human mind.

Moksha – Liberation
The ultimate spiritual freedom and fulfilment.

As light passes through these symbolic layers, it gradually reaches the vessel below — suggesting that human progress emerges through the alignment of these inner principles.

4. Artistic Composition

The installation is a multi-dimensional sculptural artwork designed to engage the viewer from multiple perspectives.

The composition consists of:

A large sculptural boat form, inspired by organic lotus-petal geometry.

A series of floating mesh petals, suspended at varying heights using fine tensile wires.

Carefully directed lighting that creates dynamic reflections and shadows across the metal surfaces.

A circular base landscape element, anchoring the sculpture within the lobby space.

The arrangement of elements creates an illusion of weightlessness, movement, and fluidity, transforming the lobby into an experiential environment.

6. Material and Craft

The installation is executed using a mixed-media sculptural approach, combining structural strength with delicate visual expression.

Materials include:

Metal wire mesh sculptural forms

Fiberglass structural elements

Metallic coating with brushed bronze finish

Custom lighting integration

Suspended tensile wire system for floating elements

The brushed metallic finish was carefully developed to ensure that light interaction produces a natural glow rather than an artificial shine, maintaining a refined and luxurious visual quality.

7. Spatial Role of the Artwork

Placed in the double-height lobby, Akasatattva serves as the visual and conceptual anchor of the entrance space.

The installation:

Creates a welcoming moment of arrival

Establishes a sense of calm and contemplation

Enhances the architectural volume of the lobby

Acts as a signature sculptural identity for the residence
